Don't Just Sit There...Stretch Your Mind
© 2001 Donald Goss
Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions." It is a quote that I find especially inspiring.
But how do you stretch your mind? Make a conscious effort to learn something new every day! You can do this in a variety of ways.
- Read a book that will inform or inspire you.
- Increase your vocabulary by learning new words.
- Learn a new historical fact.
- Take a course at a local community college.
Make a list based on your own personal interests. It's your life! You can even choose a specific area of expertise to focus on.
- Community Service
Once again, change the above list to reflect your own personal interests. But make a decision to do it today. Set aside a certain amount of time daily and devote it to learning something new. Make it a ritual. If you make this a way of life, in a few weeks you will notice your mind beginning to get sharper. You will respond to mental challenges more quickly and learning will become even easier for you. You are exercising your mental muscle and it will only get stronger. Where you are and where you end up in this life is directly related to YOUR choices and YOUR actions. You can choose to sit in front of the boob tube and numb your mind or you can choose to learn and stimulate it.
As Oliver Wendell Holmes so eloquently pointed out, once you stretch your mind, you will be forever changed.
